Personal Identifiers
Food so often can takes us back to childhood. the things i ate as a child, regardless of my distaste for them at the time, are such strong identity markers now, that when i encounter them in daily life they trigger memories that are some how organized in my brain by what taste they are attached to. I cannot eat grilled vegetables without thinking of grilling at lake Murray and my mother's old haircut.

Looking Back
As we move slowly out of the cold grip of winter, we say goodbye to the holidays. The cold weather holidays are seemingly more food centric than those in warmer months. The presence of family and friends turns food preparation and consumption into recreation. I look forward to my mother's Christmas gumbo more than presents. No other time of year revolves so tightly around the kitchen. I have assembled a few pics from the holidays just to remember all those amazing meals that are waiting on the other side of summer.
Blue Smoke at Meg's Place (good luck andy, we miss ya man!)
The bloody aftermath of a beat pickling session
Thanksgiving venison on the campfire (Thank you deer)
Sequoia and I carving tha bird
YUM
Nothing brings friends together in the south like oysters and beer. Happy New Year!
Happy Solstice!

Blythewood BBQ
Hey all you Columbia people! there is a great little BBQ joint open in Blythewood. Smoke restaurant http://www.eatsmoke.com/ is a great addition to the area BBQ scene. They have a great mix of traditional SC flavor and Cajun staples. Their mac and cheese, and meat heavy hash are worth the drive. Go get it! Support great local food!

Hangin In the Kitchen
I spent some time tonight just sitting around the kitchen, talking with my folks, and doing some quick gestures of the best part of the house. Kitchens are such a great place to relax, they are the heart of the house.
We just got a new fridge, and it rocks.
This old style coffee grinder is one of my favorite parts of our kitchen. I am a sucker for man-powered, hand-crank tools. I think it being the object of so much affection made it a lot harder to draw (I was not happy with any of my grinder sketches).
